The word Currahee appears to be derived from the Cherokee language and means "stand alone." The Currahee mountain is a part of the Georgia Piedmont or "foothill" province, Currahee Mountain rises abruptly about 800 vertical feet. Camp Toccoa was located near Currahee mountain where the men of the 506th, 501st 511th, 511th, 517th Paratrooper Infantry Regiments and 295th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company trained during WW II. The men were expected to run the 3 miles up the mountain and back to camp each day. The book "Band of Brothers" by Stephen E. Ambrose and the movie by the same name recounts the story of E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne that trained here.
