Do not ask for whom the bell tolls
But does it mourn or call?
After all a school bell
Is a cheery thing, all-in-all
They do not state its provenance
Which school, local or far?
But we will remember Ruth Howe now
A local librarian star!

This antique school bell stands on a white pedestal in front of the Salado Public library. Freshly dedicated (10 April 2010), its plaque reads simply:
In Memory of
Ruth Howe
First Volunteer Librarian
1986 to 1988
Salado Public Library

News and Notes from Salado Public Library Mar. 25th

April 10th–Ceremony dedicating an antique school bell in the memory garden at the library for Ruth Howe, the library’s first volunteer librarian who died last year. The ceremony will be at 2:00 pm and will be open to the public. There will be refreshments in the library.

OBITUARY
Ruth C. Howe

SALADO — Services for Ruth Cornelia Nelson Howe, 93, of Salado will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church of Salado with the Rev. Carl Thompson officiating.
Mrs. Howe died Saturday, Nov. 21, at her home.
She was born on April 4, 1916, to John and Cornelia Tambur Nelson in Princeton, Ill. She graduated from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill., and married Pete Howe of Burgettstown, Pa., on Feb. 3, 1938. She was past president of the Salado Chamber of Commerce; an active member in PALS; the Women’s Chorale; Salado Institute for the Humanities; St. Joseph’s chapel and the Presbyterian Church of Salado. She was a founding member of the Historical Society, the Ladies Auxiliary and participated in the establishment of the Salado Public Library, where she served as its first librarian. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include a son, Michael Howe of Austin; two daughters, Kaye Howe of Boulder, Color., and Gayle Wilson of Abilene; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
Broecker Funeral Home in Salado is in charge of arrangements.
