When it was completed in 1953 few in Willowbank thought the railway would be pulled and the town would dwindle. Today the Presbyterian church is one of a handful of buildings left in Willowbank.

Willowbank was little more than a collection of buildings around a railway siding and goods shed. There was colliery here, but mainly it was a farming hamlet. The town really sprang to life during the construction of the
railway branch in 1907. Once the railway began operation in 1909 everything settled into an annual rhythm around farm life. However, it all came to a stop in 1962 when New Zealand Railways discontinued services to Willowbank and Waikaka. Today there is little remaining besides the church.
