The castle of Lindisfarne stands dramatically high on top of Beblowe crag, and is a landmark for miles around.
The Tudor fort was built to safeguard a harbor that sheltered English ships at war with Scotland.
The accession of James VI of Scotland to the English throne in 1603 united the 2 Kingdoms, and Lindisfarne castle lost it's importance as a border fort, however a garrison remained here until the 19th.Century.
The castle is now owned by The National Trust.
Holy Island (Lindisfarne) can be reached by car or on foot via the 3 mile causeway, which is closed 2 hours before high tide and until 2 hours after high tide, the tide time tables therefore need to be studied before a crossing to the island.
