This area of Ambleside used to be an area with mills drawing power from Stock Ghyll. The road leads up to Kirkstone Pass. There is a unique number of LA22 138. LA22 being part of the postcode for Ambleside.
At the base is maker's name, but paint has obscured most of the letters. So making a best guess.
