Long Description:
Joseph S. Cullinan worked the oilfields of Northwestern Pennsylvania. He followed new oil field discoveries to Texas, landing in Beaumont right after Spindletop was struck. Within a few weeks, he had organized the Texas Fuel Company with Houston and New York investors. By 1903, the Texas Company had built its first refinery south of Beaumont in Port Arthur. When its offices were moved from Beaumont in 1908, the Texas Company became the first oil company to build headquarters in Houston, but the corporate headquarters only remained in Houston for five years before moving to New York City. The Regional Headquarters for the company, designed by architects Warren and Wetmore, were located here until moving across downtown to Heritage Plaza in the 1980s.
