As we were leaving Prague Castle, we took the streets "Ke hradu" (visit link) and then Nerudova Street to get to Malostranské námestí (Lesser Town Square). The same destination could be reached by an alternative route if, right after passing through the Giants' Gate (visit link) , we turned left onto the so-called Zámecké Schody (Note: not to be confused with the Old Castle Stairs).

The Castle Stairs, unofficially known as the Nové Zámecké schody (New Castle Stairs), connect Thunovská Street in Malá Strana with the castle ramp in front of the castle gate. The Zámecké schody cover a height difference of 36.6 meters. The stairs were created on the site of an old and steep carriage road, which has been documented since 1278 and was known in medieval times as the "Strmá cesta" (Steep Road). In the 14th century, this road was referred to as the "Stupne" (Steps), which were later renamed Zámecké Schody. From 1829 onwards, they were called Nové Zámecké Schody, and since 1870, they have been known by their original and older name, Zámecké Schody. The name "Nové Zámecké Schody" is actually misleading, as historically these stairs are older than the Old Castle Stairs, which connect Prague's Klárov in Malá Strana with the eastern gate of Prague Castle.

We have actually already been on the Zámecké Schody before (visit link) . The place is indeed very picturesque and is a frequent subject of paintings and drawings (visit link) (visit link) .
