We finished our tour of Prague Castle at its fourth courtyard. From there, we could continue down Jirská Street and take the Old Castle Stairs to the streets of Lesser Town, but this time we will choose a different route...
We'll walk back through all the castle courtyards until we pass the gate of the Giants (
visit link) in front of the castle. Here, we'll leave the statue of TGM (
visit link) on our right and embark on a steep descent along a street aptly named "Ke hradu," which we actually already know (
visit link) .
The street is short (about 150 meters) and ends with a sharp left turn where it joins Nerudova Street. However, if we don't make the turn, another staircase will appear directly in front of us. These are the so-called Radnicní Stairs or Radnické Stairs. They are approximately 100 meters long and consist of 127 steps, overcoming a height difference of about 30 meters. They received their present name in 1870 after the Hradcany Town Hall, located at the upper part of the steps.
At the bottom of the staircase, there are two statues. Currently, only one statue of St. John of Nepomuk is there, as the second statue (St. Joseph) is currently being restored.
Since both Ke hradu and Nerudova streets are quite steep, the view of the buildings and roofs of Lesser Town from the Radnicní Stairs is very picturesque and interesting.
