The pyrite deposits located in the Tharsis area were exploited by the Compagnie des Mines de Cuivre de Huelva. In 1866 they were leased to the Scottish company, The Tharsis Sulfur & Copper Cº. Ltd. and years later both companies would form a single one, with the name of the second.

The investments made could be justified with high levels of production, which required an easy exit to the sea for the products and this circumstance imposed the need for the construction of a railway that, starting from the aforementioned deposits, would reach the docks of Corrales (Punta de la Cruz) on the right bank of the Odiel River.

The railway line, inaugurated on January 1, 1869, was built with a track gauge of 1,219 mm, unusual and used only on Scottish railways. Years later, in 1888, the laying would be extended to the La Zarza mine, close to Calañas, with which the line, without taking into account small branches, reached 95 kilometers in length.

The activity of the railway was oriented mainly to the transport of minerals, with a curious exception, on Mondays a passenger train circulated in each direction between Tharsis and El Puntal.

The Scottish origin of the company motivated the first acquisitions of material to go to that source. The manufacturer Dübs, of Glasgow, supplied the first ten locomotives in the years 1867 and 1869, which would form the "Class B" of the railway.
