I 1556 fik Dronning Dorothea lagt vand ind i Sønderborg Slot.

Hønekilden (Hen Spring)has previously supplied water to the citizens as it was known for its clean water. In 1556, Queen Dorothea installed water into Sønderborg Castle. The water came from Hønekilden and was led through the town via a water pipeline made of wooden pipes. Parts of the old water pipeline is exhibited at Sønderborg Castle. Now the spring can only be seen through an iron lattice and the water does not look very healthy.
There are several legends associated with the source. If a woman could not have children, she would have to cross the spring water. Subsequently, she would be able to become pregnant. Young women could also look down into the water on Epiphany Eve, then they would see a mirror image of their new husband.
