At Harboøre Church there is a monument to 12 rescuers who lost their lives on January 25, 1897. It was the entire crew of the lifeboat Lilløre.
In the storm, it sailed out at night when two fishing boats were missing. One could see light in the distance and assumed that it was the two fishing boats. Several hours passed and at one point the empty lifeboat drifted in to the shore with its bottom up. And drowned rescuers also began drifting ashore. The lifeboat had capsized in the storm and the entire crew of 12 men had drowned.
That night, 10 women became widows and 24 children lost their father.
Incidentally, the two missing fishing boats were found by the steamship West Coast and the crew was rescued.
A monument was erected over the 12 rescuers on May 15, 1898.
Over time, many seafarers have perished on the West Coast where the sea is often very turbulent and there are many storms. Therefore, there are rescue stations along the entire coast.
