"The paper museum is located on the banks of the Charente on the site of the former Joseph Bardou Le Nil cigarette paper stationery. It was opened to the public on November 25, 1988. It presents exhibitions on the industrial stationery of the 19th and 20th centuries, on related industries (printing, factories of wire cloth and felt, mechanics, etc.), on the uses of paper and occasionally presentations of contemporary art where paper and cardboard are the plastic expression materials.
The museum buildings are built on the Charente and some rooms are crossed by the river. A paddle wheel, pulp vats, the large fireplace are vestiges that testify to the industrial activity of the site. The architectural ensemble has been completely rehabilitated (Reichen and Robert, architects).
Some of the presentations evoke the history of the site and the industrial production of paper in Charente through documents, photos and testimonies. The exhibitions present the different aspects linked to industrial stationery.
The buildings made up the former Le Nil paper mill, owned by Joseph Bardou, whose trademark was registered in 1887, which made a famous cigarette paper whose emblem was an elephant. The factory was closed in 1970, and the museum opened in 1988. "
