"229 East 4th Street, Martin Weber House,1855/c.1880, Contributing (survey #92)
Outbuilding: Shed, contributing
One story brick, side gable house on raised stone foundation. Likely built in two stages, the building has an asymmetrical six bay façade with a centered entrance and a secondary entrance in the second bay (from east). The four western bays have flat arches and the two eastern bays have segmental arches. A wooden, roofless porch extends across the four easternmost bays. At the rear of the property is a small shed roofed outbuilding with board and batten siding." ~ NRHP Nomination Form

"Probably built by Martin Weber in 1855-1856 shortly after the purchase of the lot. Weber was a successful butcher who had immigrated to the United States from France--probably one of the German speaking provinces--in the late l840s. Apparently the butcher shop was on the adjacent lot to the east. The exact date of the additions is not known. The first addition to the roofline on the façade probably dates to the l880s while the later ell could be as late as the turn of the century.

"General description: one-story rectangle-shaped endgable building of brick construction built in three major stages. All rest on a rock-faced coursed stone foundation with a partial cellar under the last two stages.

"Setting: the house rests virtually at the sidewalk on the façade." ~ DNR Historic Survey   PDF page 738
