Valkendorf chapel at Odense Cathedral is from 1633 and built in the Renaissance style. Odense Cathedral is otherwise built in Gothic style.
In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance - even up to the middle of the 19th century - the city's noblest were buried inside the churches rather than in the cemetery. They could even consider building a side chapel on the church as a burial ground for themselves and their family.
Henning Valkendorf to Glorup lived for many years in Odense, was one of the country's richest men and had his chapel built by the Cathedral. The builder was Hans Steenwinckel the younger who is also known for Rundetårn with Trinitatis Church, the reconstruction of Kronborg after a fire and Christian IV’s grave chapel at Roskilde Cathedral.
Valkendorf's chapel is a good example of the Dutch renaissance with curved gables and copper roofs.
Inside, the standard was just as high. The royal artist Caspar Fincke made a magnificent gate in 1636, which shielded the chapel from the church room.
