This imitation of a smokestack starts with a 10 foot tall base of large river stone, then changes to a steel chimney for the rest of its 30 foot height. The column has cutouts of creative floral designs, bottom to top. However, at its high end, on opposite sides of the cylinder, is a cutout ribbon of text that reads "Cementville" on one side and "Los Angeles Heights" on the opposite side. These names link the artwork to the history of this neighborhood and its surrounding area. Cementville was the name of the local quarry farther east down Basse Rd. where the rock quarry was. It has now been converted into the Alamo Quarry Marketplace shopping mall. Similarly, the name Los Angeles Heights is the well established name of the immediate area to the southwest, with this intersection of Blanco and Basse being two of the boundary lines that define the neighborhood.
A local artist, Angel Rodriguez-Diaz, created this abstract structure (and its matching stack across 220 feet across the street) as more than just a creative smokestack seen in daylight! At night, this structure is illuminated within the cone of its perforated stack and light beams out of the cutout floral designs and becomes a luminaria throughout the dark hours of night. Whether you pass this piece of art by day or by night, you can appreciate the artistic and historic qualities it displays.
