A large, wood gazebo surrounded by a dense and colorful garden sits due east of the Senior Center and northwest of the public library on town grounds known as The Monastery in Cumberland, Rhode Island.
The sizable structure's span is over 20 feet. It's square posts and beams are painted dark brown and secured directly to the concrete slab floor which is level with the ground. Railings bound six sides and leave open the north and south faces for access. The vaulted ceiling exposes the geometry of its wood rafters and unpainted vertical planks. The two-tier roof is clad in wood shingles, some of which, at the time of my visit, are in need of repair or replacement. A diminutive cupola is topped in metal. Electrical outlets are attached to one post. An industrial, general purpose, glass globe and die-cast housing light is mounted in the center of the ceiling. Typically, a single heavy-duty picnic bench is kept beneath the shelter.
The town-owned property, at 1464 Diamond Hill Road, is open during daylight hours. It also offers a well-maintained 3.2 mile loop hiking/jogging trail and a playground.
