"The toll house goes through centuries, it is today a witness of the past of this city.This door marks the entrance to Chalons on the side of Sainte-Menehould and Metz.The old medieval door is mentioned for the first time In 1516, Philippe de Thomassin, vidame of the bishop, ordered the construction of a new door and an advance that was completed in 1602. In 1755, the surroundings of the door are modified to facilitate access to the road of Vitry-le-François by Saint-Memmie
In 1766, the creation of aisles Saint John, now gone Paul Doumer, makes disappear advanced fortifications. In 1825 the Porte Saint-Jean was replaced by a barrier-type building according to the plans of the architect Just Férat.
In 1849, the two pavilions were destroyed. the door was dismantled in 1885. Only the right pavilion and part of the fence remained. Currently the pavilion is for housing use.

"L'octroi à traversé des siècles, il est aujourd’hui un témoin du passé de cett ville. Cette porte marque l'entrée de Chalons du côté de Sainte-Menehould et de Metz. L'ancienne porte médiévale est mentionnée pour la première fois en 1516 Philippe de Thomassin, vidame de l'évêque, ordonne la construction d'une nouvelle porte et d'une avancée qui fut achevée en 1602. En 1755, les abords de la porte sont modifiés pour faciliter l'accès à la route de Vitry-le-François par Saint-Memmie
En 1766, la création des allées Saint Jean, aujourd'hui allées Paul Doumer, fait disparaître les fortifications avancées. En 1825 la porte Saint-Jean est remplacée par un édifice de type barrière d‘octroi d'après les plans de l'architecte voyer Just Férat.
En 1849, les deux pavillons sont détruits. la porte est démontée en 1885. Il n'en subsiste que le pavillon de droite et une partie de la grille de clôture. Actuellement le pavillon est à usage de logement.
Le dernier Octroi de Saint Jean, autrefois lieu administratif ou était perçue l'une des plus importantes ressources de la ville demeure un monument incontournable tirant son nom de l’Église toute proche (elle existe à cet emplacement depuis l’époque médiévale) La ville était fortifiée par de haut mur qui formaient une enceinte. La Ville de Chalons comptait alors treize portes d’accès
L’octroi encore en vigueur au XIX Siècle est une contribution indirecte perçue par la ville. Elle constituait une des principales ressources. Cette contribution sera supprimée en France en 1948. "
