"110-114 E. Jefferson. Post Office Building. 1942; 1962 renovation. Architect, unknown. Contractor, unknown. Contributing.
According to Dahl’s A History of Kirkwood the post office building was constructed in 1942 and was used by the postal service until March 1961. Plans for interior modifications and small addition (on the east side) drawn by Pearce and Pearce, architects (see 140 E. Jefferson) in 1962 converted the building to commercial space, used first as a retail paint store and a beauty shop. By 1973 one portion of the building became a health food store and another was a drycleaners, although a beauty shop continued to operate in one of the three storefronts. Today, it continues to be used as retail spaces for Great Harvest Bread Company, Kirkwood Shoe Station, and Trim, a
hair salon. The parking area along the east side was historically associated with the post office and as such is a contributing feature in the district." ~ NRHP Nomination Form
110-114 E. Jefferson. Post Office Building. 1942; 1962 renovation. Architect, unknown. Contractor, unknown. Contributing.
The Post Office Building is a long one story, multicolored, red brick commercial building with a flat parapet that is divided by the brick piers into three, aluminum framed storefront bays. The canvas awning currently runs the length of the building just below a plain parapet. 1962 plans and a permit by Pearce and Pearce (the same firm was working down the block as well on an addition to the library) are on file at city hall, showing the conversion of this from the post office
to retail use. They show the interior changes and east storefront bay addition which was carefully blended with matching brick into the existing façade and simply added the east bay, corner pier, as well as a display window on the east side wall. These changes were made during the period of significance, and reflect the increased demands for retail spaces in the growing business district. The parking lot on the side of the building has historically been associated with this building since the construction of the post office and as such is a contributing feature in the district." ~ NRHP Nomination Form
"This building contains three street level shops. There is a metal
projecting hood which spans the facade and wraps onto the east
elevation. Each storefront features a single-leaf, metal and glass
entry door which is topped by a large transom. To the east of that
entry are two fixed, metal and glass display windows. The walls
beneath the display windows have been clad with Permastone. The
primary elevation of the building features vertical, recessed, brick
panels on the ends of this elevation and as a separating pier between
114 and 112.
"This is a commercial "strip-center" lot. There is a loading dock and detached storage in the rear." ~ Kirkwood Historic Survey Phase III, page 1184
