This pillar is situated 668 metres up on the summit area of Cat Law, one of the higher points of the southern edge of the Highland line that runs north-eastwards above Strathmore in the county of Angus. The rounded mountain is very prominent when viewed from the lower areas to the south and east, bounded by the adjacent lower tops of Long Goat to the east and The Crandard to the south-east, but the bulk of the mountain blends in with higher mountains to the north when viewed from the Sidlaw Hills to the south.

The mountain is situated in grouse shooting country and heather covers its lower slopes, with the top being of peat and grass along with the odd jumble of stones. The pillar sits on the fairly level summit, with the actual top being almost discernable a few feet higher to the north. The pillar is in good condition on top of a slightly eroded plinth. As expected from such a prominent landmark, views are extensive in all directions from mountains to sea.

STEEPNESS: Steep all around on the lower slopes, the easiest gradient being from the south-west where most ascents occur.

TERRAIN: Heather and peat abounds with the occasional bulldozed track snaking its way up, including one almost straight to the summit from the south-west.

ACCESSIBILITY:The mountain is isolated by valleys all around its base and can be climbed from any point, but the route from Balintore to the south-west follows a track for two miles right to the summit.

NAVIGATION: The track from Balintore is the easiest way to follow in mist, although it begins on the hillside on the other side of a wood from the starting point at the old entrance to Balintore Castle. A faint path from the roadway leads off northward from the entrance passing over two gates and a fence heading westward around the wood. Alternatively an open gate to the east of the wood on the road, leads into a field and picks up the track. The track then leads up the south-west side of the mountain before twisting eastwards up the higher slopes, eventually reaching a fence which leads north-eastwards to a series of stone shelters. The pillar is a few yards to the north-west from here.

DANGER: Avoid during the grouse shooting season (mid-August to December except Sundays).
