[EN] "The Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt is a masterpiece of classical architecture and one of Karl Friedrich Schinkel's major works.

Already in 1776, at the instigation of Frederick the Great, a small comedy house was opened on this site, which was built according to the plans of the Prussian Chief Building Director Johann Bouman the Elder. Its renaming as the Royal National Theatre in 1787 underscored its rise to become one of the leading stages in the country.

History of the Schauspielhaus
At the beginning of the 19th century, Carl Gotthard Langhans was commissioned to rebuild the theatre, which was ceremoniously opened on New Year's Day 1802. But in 1817 the theater fell victim to a fire, which made a new construction inevitable. King Frederick William III awarded the architect Karl Frederick Schinkel the contract for the theatre, but he was bound by several of the king's specifications in his planning. After about three years of construction, the theatre was inaugurated in 1821 in the presence of the king.

After the Schauspielhaus was badly affected by the fighting at the end of the Second World War, it was rebuilt as a concert hall between 1979 and 1984."
