Texte de la plaque:

Jeanne Mance
(1606-1673)

Text of the plaque:

On this site Jeanne Mance founded the Hotel Dieu de Montreal, one of the oldest hospitals in the country. She arrived in Ville Marie with Paul de Chomedey de Maisonevue in 1642, and remained the only nurse there until 1659, when she brought the Hospitalaires de St. Joseph to New France. At the time when there were numberous confrontations with the Iroquois she cared for the wounded and sick with compassion and dilligence, while increasing her efforts to recuit new settlers. Canada's first lay nurse, Jeane Mance remains an inspiration to those who seek a career in the nursing profession.
