[DE] "Der Alexanderplatz liegt am nordöstlichen Rand der historischen Mitte von Berlin. Der rechteckige Platz im Ortsteil Mitte geht auf den Platz vor dem Königs Thor zurück und erhielt 1805 nach dem russischen Zaren Alexander I. seinen heutigen Namen. Im Berliner Volksmund wird er meist nur „Alex“ genannt.
Der zu Beginn der 1930er Jahre umgestaltete Platz sowie ein Großteil der umliegenden Bebauung erlitten im Zweiten Weltkrieg durch alliierte Luftangriffe erhebliche Zerstörungen. Die Ost-Berliner Verwaltung ließ in den 1960er Jahren das Areal des Platzes im Zentrum der DDR-Hauptstadt mit Ausnahme des Alexander- und Berolinahauses abräumen. Der Platz wurde zur Fußgängerzone und auf rund acht Hektar vergrößert. Auf dieser nun über viermal so großen Fläche entstanden bis 1970 u. a. das Interhotel Stadt Berlin und das HO-Centrum-Warenhaus, die heute als Park Inn und Galeria Kaufhof weiter bestehen.
Mit täglich mehr als 360.000 Passanten war der Alexanderplatz 2009 der viertbelebteste Platz in Europa und ist laut einer Studie die meistbesuchte Gegend Berlins noch vor der City West um Kurfürstendamm und Tauentzienstraße. Er ist ein beliebter Ausgangspunkt für Touristen, die von den beiden gleichnamigen Bahnhöfen der S-Bahn (Stadtbahn) und U-Bahn aus viele Sehenswürdigkeiten wie den Fernsehturm, das Nikolaiviertel sowie das Rote Rathaus erreichen können. Mit den Einkaufszentren Alexa und die mitte, den Rathauspassagen sowie der Galeria Kaufhof gibt es zudem mehrere große Einzelhandelsstandorte.
Fälschlicherweise wird oft auch die südwestlich hinter dem S-Bahnhof liegende weiträumige Freifläche mit Fernsehturm, Neptunbrunnen, Marienkirche und Rotem Rathaus dem Alexanderplatz zugeordnet. Dieses Areal im zentralen Bereich der ehemaligen Berliner Altstadt ist jedoch namenlos und gehört wie das Marx-Engels-Forum zwischen Spandauer Straße und der Spree nicht zum Platz."
