Ajo is a southern Arizona copper mining town who's human history stretches back far before the Anglo development of the town in 1916. Sited next to an open pit copper mine, the town was developed by Phelps Dodge who owned most of the land. The decision to build the church was made in 1917 with the cornerstone laid in 1926. At that time the town was little more than a collections of tents, shacks and a saloon. Construction of the church was supported by the family of John Greenway, one of Roosevelt's Rough Riders and owner of the mine. Phelps Dodge deeded the land to the church at the end of WWII.
