Chong Mek is a not overly busy border crossing between Thailand and Laos. The two closest towns are Ubon Ratchathani on the Thai side and Savanakhet on the Laos side. The crossing is a tad rugged, however, let me be clear, the crossing is entirely safe, no physical threat, but keep an eye on your possessions and your hand on the money in your pocket. Also, do not be surprised if the Laos immigration police ask for an extra $1 to process your visa. My advice is to pay, not to make a fuss.

The Thai immigration office is a large building, but usually quiet. Being stamped in or out usually proceeds quickly, unless there is a bus load of Laos workers waiting to be processed before proceeding to their new work place in the Kingdom of Thailand. One leaves Thailand by walking across a sandy path, through a broken fence (I kid you not) and more sandy paths, past expensive money change counters, good folk offering cheap (not) SIM cards, etc.

After a few minutes of walking you will arrive at the Laos immigration office. Here take the form, complete the form, and hand your passport and money over. The signage here is confusing, as the departure office had the arrival sign and vice versa. This adds to the mystery. About half an hour are required to process your Laos visa application. From here buses and cars are available to take your further into Laos. Good luck.

Many signs saying "NO CAMERA", "NO PHONE".
