Bench Text:

Welcome to Project SIT (Seawall Interpretive). You can now find 12 benches created through Artist Boat’s Eco-Art Residency Program at KIPP Coastal Village (KCV). Over 180 KIP students in kindergarten and 1st grade hand-painted tiles during the 2009-2010 school year with Eco-Art Educator Devin Taylor. During the residency, students learned about the principals of Ocean Literacy and Gulf of Mexico ecosystems and then created tiles related to these themes. The Eco-Art Residency and the public art were funded by KCV, Reliant Energy, and NRG. Special thanks to: Lynn Barnes, Gene Fissler, and Breck Sacra for assuring this residency could create a community outreach tool to promote Ocean Literacy on Galveston Island and enrich the lives of students on the Gulf coast. Artist Boat is leading the way for a beautification project on the Galveston seawall. The benches offer a place for natural interpretation of Galveston Island, Galveston Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico’s coastal and ocean processes, natural resources, recreational opportunities, coastal heritage, and multiple uses of our coast. Each of the 65+ benches will be topped with hand-painted tiles interpreting a series of themes fitting this description. This project will be completed by student work from Eco-Art Residencies and commissions to artists through a juried process.
