Kirkwood was founded in 1853 as a railroad town and was the first planned suburb west of the Mississippi River. Kirkwood is named after James Pugh Kirkwood, the engineer in charge of locating, surveying and building the railroad. The current city hall was built starting in 1941 and completed in 1942.
