Located near the J.N. "Ding" Darling Visitor and Educational Center is the first section of the Indigo Trail. This first section consists of a boardwalk that is accessible by wheelchairs and mobility devices. This beginning section is free. The remaining portion of the Indigo Trail is a compacted shell path. There is a fee for this portion consisting of $1.00 per person. The trail is open during the same times as the Wildlife Drive, see website for details (

The trail is 2 miles long or 4 miles round trip. Pay your fee at the ranger shack located on Wildlife Drive. CASH ONLY. There is a shaded pavilion at the Cross Dike Trail that intersects with the Indigo Trail. There are also restrooms at this location. This trail can be very hot and buggy with little to no shade. Be sure to bring drinking water, bug repellent, sunscreen and brimmed hats.
The Indigo Trail can be used by pedestrians or bicyclists. The boardwalk portion bicyclists must walk their bicycles. The compacted shell section bicycles can be ridden.
Parking is at the trailhead. There is overflow parking adjacent to the main parking lot. During the height of tourist season if both parking lots are full there is parking east of Rabbit Road on Sanibel Captiva Road with a tram service to the trailhead. For those with bicycles there is a bike path to the trailhead.
