Die Sonne sticht an diesem Nachmittag. Gewitterschwüle drückt auf den Park am Mäuseturm. Der Weg ist beschwerlich. Aber Kühlung ist unübersehbar in Sicht. Im Schatten der majestätischen Nikolaus-Eiche lässt es sich gut aushalten. Ein wunderbares Plätzchen, das seit vielen Jahren auch schon dem Freundeskreis der Boulespieler ein Eichenlaub gedecktes Dach über dem Kopf bietet. Wobei die Hartgesottenen unter ihnen auch schon um die Weihnachtszeit und im Schnee eine Kugel geworfen haben.
Von der Kunst der Improvisation
Ja, die Truppe der rund 20 Spieler ist unkonventionell und locker drauf. Improvisieren müssen sie auch, sonst würde das hier nicht funktionieren.
Auf der Bank stehen Getränke, auch ein Fläschchen Sekt ist auszumachen. Wenn einer Geburtstag hat, wird auch einer ausgegeben; die anderen singen. Die älteste Spielerin ist 91 Jahre alt.
Drei Gruppen sind gerade am Spielen. Denn zwei Runden wenigstens werden absolviert, so lange muss die Pause warten. „Das ist alles völlig zwanglos“, sagt Norbert Schuber. In der Tat spielt die Gruppe um die Eiche herum, auf den Wegen. Kürzlich wurde vom Gartenamt der Belag erneuert, das fand Beifall. Die Boulespieler teilen sich die Fläche mit Spaziergängern, Rad- und Rollstuhlfahrern. Manchmal wird es dann etwas sportlich. Stets hat die Binger Gelassenheit aber gesiegt.
Die Stahlkugeln sollen möglichst nahe an das „Schwein“ heranfliegen, das ist die kleine rosa Kugel, auf die sich alle Spieler konzentrieren. Die Punkte werden entsprechend der Nähe zur „Wutz“, wie es auch heißt, verteilt. Im Zweifelsfall kommt ein Maßband zur Hilfe. Die Stimmung ist mal wieder bestens. Für dieses Vergnügen braucht es nicht viel. Die Boulespieler haben sich mit dem Areal arrangiert. Und doch: „Regelgerecht können wir derzeit hier nicht spielen“, sagt Schuber. Das liegt einfach daran, dass es eben Wege sind und keine Bouleflächen.
Im Bauausschuss wurde kontrovers über einen SPD-Antrag diskutiert, mehr Boule-Flächen in der Stadt zu schaffen (wir berichteten). Im Park am Mäuseturm gibt es auch noch eine, in der Nähe des Schachspiels. Aber wer einmal unter der Nikolaus-Eiche gewesen ist, hat verstanden, warum es die Spieler hierher zieht.
Und dabei gibt es just unter der Nikolaus-Eiche auch eine große, geeignete Fläche, die bestens für Turniere geeignet wäre. Merkwürdigerweise bewegen sich alle, samt Spaziergänger und Rollstuhlfahrer, um diese Fläche herum, so, als ob sie vermint sei. Niemand setzt den Fuß drauf. Das gemiedene Areal ist mit altem Kopfsteinpflaster ausgeführt. Die Boulespieler berichten, dass hier einmal das Denkmal zum Ausbau des Binger Lochs hätte aufgestellt werden sollen, das derzeit an der B9 steht. Aus diesen Plänen ist nichts geworden. Aber die Pflasterfläche hat überlebt.
Norbert Schuber hat schon mehrfach an das Gartenamt geschrieben. Dabei sind die Boulespieler mal wieder bescheiden. Sie wollen gar nicht, dass die Pflastersteine entfernt werden. Es genüge, die Fläche in Kanthölzer zu fassen und mit wassergebundenem Material etwas aufzuschütten. Das könnten sie auch selbst machen. Eine Stifterin für das Holz gibt es auch schon. Damit erhielte der Freundeskreis einen normgerechten Platz, und umgekehrt würde nicht massiv in die Gestaltung des Parkes eingegriffen werden. Bei Nichtgefallen könnte jederzeit die wassergebundene Decke entfernt und das Pflaster wieder sichtbar gemacht werden.
ber natürlich – und die Bescheidenheit meldet sich wieder zu Wort – „können wir auch so boulen“, sagt Schuber. Denn Ärger wollen alle weder heraufbeschwören noch provozieren. Dafür macht das Spielen in der Gemeinschaft viel zu viel Spaß. Es ist nur ein Vorschlag."

A wonderful place, which for many years now has also offered the circle of friends of the boules players an oak leaf-covered roof over their heads. The hard-boiled among them have already thrown a ball around Christmas time and in the snow.
The art of improvisation
Yes, the troupe of about 20 players is unconventional and relaxed. They also have to improvise, otherwise it wouldn't work here.
There are drinks on the bench, a bottle of sparkling wine can also be spotted. If one has a birthday, one is also spent; the others sing. The oldest player is 91 years old.
Three groups are currently playing. Because at least two rounds are completed, that's how long the break has to wait. "It's all completely casual," says Norbert Schuber. In fact, the group is playing around the oak tree, on the paths. Recently, the garden office renewed the pavement, which was applauded. The petanque players share the area with walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users. Sometimes it gets a bit sporty. But Bingen's serenity has always won the day.
The steel balls should fly as close as possible to the "pig", that is the small pink ball on which all players concentrate. The points are distributed according to the proximity to the "Wutz", as it is also called. In case of doubt, a tape measure comes to the rescue. The mood is once again great. For this pleasure it does not need much. The petanque players have come to terms with the area. And yet: "We can't play according to the rules here at the moment," says Schuber. This is simply because they are paths and not boule areas.
The building committee had a controversial discussion about an SPD proposal to create more boule areas in the city (we reported). In the park at the Mäuseturm there is also another one, near the chess game. But anyone who has ever been under the Nikolaus oak has understood why the players are drawn here.
And there is also a large, suitable area just under the Santa Claus oak, which would be best suited for tournaments. Strangely enough, everyone, including walkers and wheelchair users, move around this area as if it were mined. Nobody puts their foot on it. The avoided area is made of old cobblestones. The petanque players report that the monument to the expansion of the Binger Loch, which is currently on the B9, should have been erected here. Nothing has come of these plans. But the paved area has survived.
Norbert Schuber has already written to the garden office several times. The petanque players are once again modest. They don't want the paving stones to be removed at all. It is sufficient to grasp the surface in squared lumber and fill it up with water-bound material. You could also do that yourself. There is already a donor for the wood. This would give the circle of friends a standard-compliant place, and conversely would not massively interfere with the design of the park. If they don't like it, the water-bound ceiling could be removed at any time and the pavement made visible again.
But of course - and the modesty speaks again - "we can also boul like this", says Schuber. Because everyone neither wants to conjure up nor provoke trouble. Playing in the community is far too much fun for that. It's just a suggestion."
