Xun Li is abducted late at night. A ransom of £250,000 is demanded. The random is to be delivered by Rachel Li in a free trade bag. Banks and the team follow Rachel, but are wrong footed when the abductors instruct Rachel to change cars to a red Golf. It gets further complicated when Rachel takes several free trade bags from the car and drops them off in several different baskets in a shopping mall. Fortunately DS Cabbot has the good sense to put a tracker in the parked Golf. The Golf makes off with the original free trade bag with the money in it.

The car is traced to an abandoned factory where Xun Li is found in a cellar. He is taken to hospital, but signs himself out and goes home. Later that evening he is found dead with head injuries and his head bound in cling film.

Banks starts to accumulate suspects. One suspect is a disgruntled tenant, Mark Rundle, whose wife is in a vegetative state after carbon monoxide poisoning in a building that Xun Li owned. Another suspect is Xun’s son, Bo, who is a hospital worker and had fallen out with his father two weeks earlier. The final suspect is racketeer Wendy Xiao, who Xun Li was going to expose. Her racketeer boyfriend specialised in murdering people using cling film.

The autopsy shows that Xun died from an asthma attack brought on by stress. Banks is suspicious that Xun knew his killer as they used the front door, with no sign of forced entry. There is a breakthrough when DI Morton notices that Rundle’s car has a problem with a headlight which shows up on CCTV footage of the moments leading up to the abduction. Rundle tells the police that his daughter had his car on the night. When the police call on his daughter Bo Li does a runner from the back door.

Under interrogation Bo Li admits to the abduction and to hitting his father on the night he died. He states that his father was alive when he left. The abduction was planned after a blackmail attempt failed. The blackmail attempt involved a video from china which showed that Xun was not a dissident, as he claimed, but a police informant. Bo tried to blackmail his father to get money for the Rundles.

Banks shows Xun’s brother, Chang, the video. Apparently Chang and his wife were arrested and tortured in China. Chang’s wife died in custody. Xun had informed on Chang and his wife, but Chang had only realised when Bo showed him the video. Chang Li was the murderer.
