The church of Sainte-Soline is one of the largest churches in the Mellois region. Amputated from her bedside, she dominates the square with its bell tower. It is in the heart of an ancient environment, close to the Gallo-Roman road that connected Poitiers to Saintes.
Today parish church, it was in the twelfth century a priory dependent on the abbey of Saint-Maixent. Later, texts quote the church as belonging to the Augustinian abbey of Saint-Séverin-sur-Boutonne.

The church Sainte-Soline is the only parish church placed under this term in the diocese of Poitiers. The life of Saint Soline began on the banks of the Dive in the first century, then she suffered martyrdom in Chartres. His remains were buried in the Saint-Père church.
The church was classified a historical monument in 1907 for its Romanesque elements.

The church lost its sanctuary, probably in an apse with a straight span originally destroyed during the Hundred Years War (14th and 15th centuries). The church underwent arson and the town, in 1348, by a man named Moreau Audouin, a mercenary in the pay of the English settled at Lusignan Castle. Is it then that the church lost transept and choir? We can see the traces of this amputation on the current flat bedside. The vaults, covered in slate, resisted the fire. The town hall, former presbytery, was rebuilt in 1861 on the site of the choir, of which there remains no remains.

The west facade, redone in the eighteenth century, was originally a tripartite facade, blind old arches can still be seen in the stone. The bell tower was rebuilt in the thirteenth century, a form of steeple found in the church of Clussais-la-Pommeraie.

Inside the building, there is a tripartite nave, that is to say a central nave and two collaterals. What is noteworthy here is the narrowness of these two lateral vessels, probably having more a function of shoulder than circulation.

The sculpture of Sainte-Soline is not part of the tradition of the Melle shipyards, but is a separate project. It can be seen from the entrance with this capital adorned with two busts (a man and a woman), unique in the sculpture of Mellois. It is also worth noting the care given to the base of the columns, one of the characteristics of the church. We will also notice the curious font near the altar-major. It represents a three-headed, three faces sharing four eyes, unique in the region.

Aujourd'hui église paroissiale, elle était au XIIe siècle un prieuré dépendant de l'abbaye de Saint-Maixent. Plus tard, des textes citent l'église comme appartenant à l'abbaye augustine de Saint-Séverin-sur-Boutonne.

L’église Sainte-Soline est la seule église paroissiale placée sous ce vocable dans le diocèse de Poitiers. La vie de sainte Soline commence sur les bords de la Dive au Ier siècle, puis elle aurait subi le martyre à Chartres. Ses restes y auraient été inhumée dans l’église Saint-Père.
L'église a été classé Monument Historique en 1907 pour ses éléments romans.

L'église a perdu son sanctuaire, probablement en abside avec une travée droite à l'origine qui a été détruite au cours de la guerre de Cent Ans (XIVe et XVe siècles). L'église a subi un incendie volontaire ainsi que le bourg, en 1348, par un dénommé Moreau Audouin, mercenaire à la solde des Anglais installés au château de Lusignan. Est-ce à ce moment là que l'église perdit transept et chœur ? On peut voir les traces de cette amputation sur le chevet plat actuel. Les voûtes, couvertes en lauzes, ont résisté à l'incendie. La mairie, ancien presbytère, a été rebâtie en 1861 sur l’emplacement du chœur, dont il ne reste aucun vestiges.

La façade ouest, refaite au XVIIIe siècle, était à l'origine une façade tripartite, les anciennes arcatures aveugles se devinent encore dans la pierre. Le clocher-porche a été refait au XIIIe siècle, une forme de clocher que l'on retrouve à l'église de Clussais-la-Pommeraie.

A l'intérieur de l'édifice, on observe une nef tripartite, c'est-à-dire une nef centrale et deux collatéraux. Ce qui est à remarquer ici, c'est l'étroitesse de ces deux vaisseaux latéraux, ayant sans doute plus une fonction d'épaulement que de circulation.

La sculpture de Sainte-Soline ne s'inscrit pas dans la lignée des chantiers de Melle, mais constitue un chantier à part. On peut s'en apercevoir dès l'entrée avec ce chapiteau orné de deux bustes (un homme et une femme), unique dans la sculpture du Mellois. Il est à remarquer aussi le soin apporté à la base des colonnes, une des caractéristiques de l'église. On remarquera également le curieux bénitier près de l'autel-majeur. Il représente un tricéphale, trois visages partageant quatre yeux, unique dans la région.
