Historic Interest

The Blue Bell is a Grade II listed building (No.1255231) in Nottingham City Council's Old Market Square Conservation Area. Originally known as the Bell, there had been a public house on the site since at least 1761. A Home Ales house, the Bell was renamed the Blue Bell in 1928 (Whitworth 2010). The current building is late 19th century remodelled in 1904 in the Baroque Revival style by Nottingham architect Hedley J. Price (Historic England). In 1868, when the Bell was a fully licensed establishment under W. Moseley there were three pubs in the area with the same name (Wright). As at November 2017, the freehold for the Blue Bell Inn (NT243338) was held by Ei Group plc [Reg. No. 2562808], formerly Enterprise Inns. "...altered mid and late C20. Red brick, with faience fronts and slate roofs with various gable stacks. Baroque Revival style front to Upper Parliament Street. 3 storeys plus attics; 3 bays. Green glazed faience shopfront with foliage pilasters. Central doorway with overlight and shell canopy, flanked by segment-arched cross mullioned windows. Upper floors, brown glazed, are divided by rusticated half-columns in 3 orders. First floor has a blank centre with a bracket carrying a dummy bell. On each side, a canted oriel window with bracket and crest, and ogee headed lights with transoms. Above again, a single window flanked by 3-light cross mullioned windows, all with segment heads and voussoirs. Attics, above the main cornice, have a broken segmental pediment with finial, flanked by a parapet. Central Venetian window with keystones, flanked by single windows, all composite sashes. Rear elevation to Forman Street, 3 storeys, 8 window range, has modillion cornice. Green and blue glazed pubfront with cross mullioned windows. Above, regular courses of composite sashes. INTERIOR mainly refitted late C20. Central bar, early C20, has panelled wainscotting and bow fronted bar, and cross beam ceiling with central skylight." (Historic England)."
