I only ever knew it as The Shire (and for a short time The Pied Piper) back in the 1980's / 1990's.
The pub [then The Shire Horse] was closed after a drugs raid in 2006 [Ref - (
visit link) ], for 3 months. The rebranded Cherry Tree called last orders for the final time in 2012. It was a large Victorian high street pub, originally owned by Whitbread. It is now home to a Tesco Express since 2013.

Many memories of this pub in my youth, even the story of when several guys arrived in a large pick-up, said they were there to service the snooker table and walked out with it - it was not seen again. All in broad daylight.
