PARISH HISTORY

In May of 1965, Bishop Gerald Emmett Carter established the parish of St. John the Divine, to serve the growing population of southwest London. This was one of four parishes established in the city at the same time to serve the expanding four corners of the city. A site was chosen on Base Line Road, West.

Father Stanley McGuire was named as First Pastor. Sunday masses were held for 2 years in the auditorium of Westminster Secondary School while weekday masses were celebrated in the home of parishioners. On April 16 th, 1967, the sod was turned, marking the start of the building of the church. This was done by Monsignor W.T. Flannery, Pastor of St. Martin's Parish, our mother parish.

On October 1 st, 1967, Diocesan Chancellor, Monsignor F.J. Laverty laid the cornerstone. The first mass in the church was held on February 4 th, 1968, and the solemn blessing by Bishop Carter occurred on May 5 th, 1968.

From a starting population of 175 families, the parish is now home to 1300 families.
