Die Franzensfeste ist eine beeindruckende Festung aus massigen Granitquadern und mit einer Größe von 65.000 m² die Talenge südlich des Stausees dominierend. Im Inneren ist die Franzensfeste ein gigantisches Labyrinth aus Räumen, Gängen und Treppen. Die Obere Festung ist mit der Unteren Festung über eine spektakuläre Treppe mit 451 Stufen verbunden. Die Festung Franzensfeste wurde 1833-39 errichtet, nach Kaiser Franz I. von Österreich benannt und war damals das stärkste Festungswerk Europas. Doch diese Verteidigungsanlage hat nie echtes Kampfgeschehen erlebt und war bald technisch überholt.
Seit 2005 ist die Festung Franzensfeste zugänglich. Sie beheimatet die dauerhaften Ausstellungen „Geschichte der Franzensfeste“. „Infostelle zum Brenner-Basis-Tunnel“ und „Bunker – die Welt dahinter“. Zusätzlich werden in der Franzensfeste Sonderausstellungen eingerichtet."
