The Wallaces Lead Gold Puddling Precinct is the site of more puddling pits than anywhere else in Victoria,Puddling was a method (invented in Australia) used during the Gold Rushes to break up clay soil to separate out the gold. A horse was used to drag a weight round a circular pit filled with water and material brought up from deep lead mines close by.
