There is a special implement that is put on the back of the ice resurfacing machine (e.g. Zamboni) which carves grooves in the ice about 1 cm apart and a few millimetres deep. This allows a consistently flat surface and one that isn't too fast for the stocks to slide on. The games are played from sideboard to sideboard.
