The Longdendale Trail is a long-distance trail that runs a distance of approximately 6.5 miles (10.4km) from Hadfield, Derbyshire to Woodhead Tunnel before crossing the A628 and climbing a steep moorland track towards the Yorkshire border at Salter's Brook.
The route follows the line of the former Manchester to Sheffield railway, converted to a safe, traffic-free trail for everyone, owned and managed by United Utilities.
The trail forms part of the much longer Trans Pennine Trail that runs from Southport on the west coast to Hornsea on the east coast.
The Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway was an early British railway company which opened in stages between 1841 and 1845 between Sheffield and Manchester via Ashton-under-Lyne. In conjunction with the proposed Sheffield and Lincolnshire Junction Railway and Great Grimsby and Sheffield Junction Railway, it was renamed the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1847.
Passenger services ceased in 1970 and the last train ran on 17 July 1981.
