Coat of arms and city colours

The city coat of arms shows a red coat of arms shield, which is sprinkled with golden rectangular stones. The number is not fixed and varies in common breakdowns between twelve and fourteen pieces. In the field there is an upright silver lion jumping to the left with a flared golden tongue, which is covered with a black five-seater tournament collar. The lion has three-fingered claws reinforced in blue.

Stolberg has carried this coat of arms since 1880 and was proposed to the then mayor Friedrich von Werner by the town archivist and goes back to the seal and coat of arms of former lords of the castle, the noble lords of Stolberg-Frenz-Setterich. They took over the Limburg lion as their heraldic animal, since it originated in the dukedom of Limburg and now appears in the coat of arms of Stolberg. Tournament collars and stones form distinctive features that are typical in the Rhineland. The tournament collar, which is normally placed in the shield head, is lowered so as not to affect the shield figure of the lion.

The city colours are red and yellow in reference to the basic colours of the municipal coat of arms.
