Harry F. Byrd was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia on June 10, 1887 and rose to become one of the most dominate figures in Virginia Politics. He grew apples in the fertile land of the Shenandoah Valley, an endeavor that earned him a small fortune. He also was the publisher of the Winchester Star Newspaper. He became interested in politics and was elected Governor of Virginia, serving from 1925-1929. He greatest contribution to Virginia Politics can when he was elected to the United States Senate, serving from 1933-1965. Labeled a conservative democrat, he would often oppose the more liberal policies of President Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy and Johnson. Byrd was the head of the “Byrd Machine” and controlled Virginia Politics for more than 50-years. When Senator Byrd retired in 1965 he was succeeded by his son, Harry F. Byrd, Jr. who served in the Senate for another 18-years. In retirement Senator Byrd retired to his home in Winchester, Virginia where he died on October 20, 1966. He was laid to rest in the Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester.

Harry Flood Byrd was born on June 10, 1887 in Martinsburg, West Virginia and just a few weeks later his family moved to Winchester, Virginia. He is the older brother of explorer and aviator, Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr. As a young adult Byrd earned a small fortune as an apple grower in the Winchester Area and became the publisher of the Winchester Star Newspaper. Harry Byrd became involved in politics at an early age and was active in the democratic party. He was elected the 50th Governor of Virginia, serving from 1925 – 1929. In 1933 he was elected to the United States Senate, serving until 1965. Labeled as a “conservative democrat” Byrd often opposed and blocked the more liberal legislation of Presidents Franklin, Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. The Byrd Machine as it was called controlled Virginia Politics for more than 50-year. When Senator Byrd retired from the senate in 1965 he was succeeded by his son, Harry F. Byrd, Jr. Senator Byrd retired to his home in Winchester, Virginia and passed away quietly on October 20, 1966.
