The great forge is the realization of the steel project of the Count of Buffon Georges-Louis LECLERC. In 1768, he decided to use his discoveries and his experiments on iron. The iron and steel region of Montbardois is the ideal location for this project especially since it owns the land of Buffon since 1732. The work began in 1768, the blast furnace works from 1769 and the rest of the buildings is completed in 1772.
The design of the factory is faithful to the innovative spirit of Enlightenment. There are two parts: a domestic complex and an industrial complex. In 1866, an exceptional flood ended the steel industry which was replaced by a cement plant until 1923, the date of the cessation of any industrial activity following fires.
The property belongs to the same family since 1860 is the 6th generation, having by the game of alliances a common ascendant with Buffon. Living on the spot, they manage to keep the buildings as they are and gradually restore the buildings thanks to the help of the visitors. "

La grande forge est la réalisation du projet sidérurgique du comte de Buffon Georges-Louis LECLERC. C’est en 1768, qu’il décide de mettre à profit ses découvertes et ses expériences sur le fer. La région sidérurgique du montbardois est l’emplacement idéal pour ce projet d’autant plus qu’il est propriétaire des terres de Buffon depuis 1732. Les travaux commencent en 1768, le haut-fourneau fonctionne dès 1769 et le reste des bâtiments est terminé en 1772.
La conception de l’usine est fidèle à l’esprit novateur des Lumières. On distingue deux parties : un ensemble domestique et un ensemble industriel. En 1866, une crue exceptionnelle met fin à l’activité sidérurgique qui est remplacée par une cimenterie jusqu’en 1923, date de la cessation de toute activité industrielle à la suite d’incendies.
La propriété appartient à la même famille depuis 1860 soit la 6ième génération, ayant par le jeu des alliances un ascendant commun avec Buffon. Vivants sur place, ils parviennent à maintenir les édifices en l’état et restaurent petit à petit les bâtiments grâce à l’aide des visiteurs."
