The Bentonville Confederate Monument, also known as the Confederate Veterans of Benton County Memorial, is located in the Public Square Park, across from the Benton County Courthouse. It depicts a bearded Confederate soldier holding his rifle in front with the butt grounded and his hands resting across the barrel. A blanket roll is draped from his proper left shoulder to his proper right hip, while a pouch, its strap hanging off his proper right shoulder, rests against his proper left hip. The 7'x2'x2' granite sculpture is supported by a 14'x9'x9' granite base.
A metal plate attached to the west face of the monument contains the message "JAMES H. BERRY / 1841-1913 / SOLDIER AND STATESMAN / BELOVED OF ARKANSAS / 2ND LIEUTENANT / CO. E 16TH ARK. INFANTRY, C.S,A. / LEGISLATOR - JURIST / GOVERNOR OF ARKANSAS / UNITED STATES SENATOR / HE PERFORMED EVERY DUTY / WITH AN EYE / SINGLE TO THE PUBLIC WELFARE / AND HIS OWN UNBLEMISHED HONOR / THIS TABLE IS PLACED HERE / BY THE JAMES H. BERRY CHAPTER / UNITED DAUGHTERS OF / THE CONFEDERACY / THE PAT CLEBURNE CAMP / SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS AND OTHER FRIENDS / IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE / AND APPRECIATION / OF HIS NOBLE LIFE AND CHARACTER. This plate was dedicated on January 30, 1914; the one-year anniversary of Berry's death.
Engraved in the granite of the west face is "TO THE SOUTHERN *SOLDIERS / ERECTED BY A. J. BATES AND / THE JAMES H. BERRY CHAPTER / UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY / AUG. 8, 1908. / CONFEDERATE."
The inscription on the south face of the base reads "1861-65 / CONFEDERATE.
The east face is inscribed "THEY FOUGHT FOR HOME AND FATHERLAND /
CONFEDERATE."
The north face contains the inscription "THEIR NAMES ARE BORNE ON HONOR'S SHIELD / THEIR RECORD IS WITH GOD / CONFEDERATE."
There is minor spalling and guano on the base and some organic growth on the sculpture. However, a 1993 SOS! survey reports that the monument is in good condition and is well-maintained.
