"Situation et accès
La place Arago est sans doute la plus connue de Perpignan, mais ce n'est pas la plus centrale (se serait plutôt la place de la République, mais c'est un lieu d'échanges, entre les rues de la vieille ville et les quais ou le quartier des Dames de France. Elle est face au tribunal et à côté du palmarium.
De quoi s'agit-il ?
La place Arago est la place la plus connue de Perpignan. Elle est refaite approximativement tous les 20 ans, actuellement elle est plutôt réussie. La statue de François Arago a été placée sur un socle plus petit, et déplacée au bout de la place. Une grande fontaine sèche la traverse, c'est très agréable surtout en été.
A proximité se trouve le parking Arago, un parking créé à la place de la dalle Arago détruite en 2004 pour l'occasion. Cette dalle (et le bâtiment du Trésor Public) fut construite initialement sur l'emplacement du lycée Arago, avant qu'il ne soit reconstruit dans le quartier St Martin (1956).
Quand au tribunal de Perpignan, il fut construit au milieu du XIXe siècle entre la place et la dalle Arago.
Histoire
Bien sûr l'histoire de la place Arago est liée à celle du quartier où elle se trouve. Au XVe siècle le lieu était un terrain vague appelé "la rambla". Personne n'y avait d'intérêts particuliers, il s'agissait d'une zone inhospitalière en dehors des remparts. Mais peu avant 1863, on retrouve cet endroit nommé ' le bastion des bourgeois'. C'était devenu une promenade assez prisée des perpignanais.
En 1863 la place telle qu'on la connaît fut créée, mais elle n'était dédiée à personne si ce n'est au tribunal de justice construit tout récemment. En 1865 un projet de construction d'une fontaine fut annulé, elle devait se nommer "Monument pour la fontaine de la place du palais de justice". Ce n'est qu'en 1876 que la place prit le nom François Arago. Trois ans plus tard sa statue y fut déposée. La statue elle même est une œuvre d'Antonin Mercier et le socle est de Paul Pujol, architecte."

What is it about ?
Place Arago is the most famous square in Perpignan. It is redone approximately every 20 years, currently it is rather successful. The statue of François Arago was placed on a smaller base, and moved to the end of the square. A large dry fountain crosses it, it is very pleasant especially in summer.
Nearby is the parking Arago, parking created instead of the slab Arago destroyed in 2004 for the occasion. This slab (and the Public Treasury Building) was originally built on the site of Arago High School, before it was rebuilt in the St Martin district (1956).
When the court of Perpignan, it was built in the middle of the nineteenth century between the square and the slab Arago.
History
Of course the history of Arago Square is linked to that of the neighborhood where it is located. In the 15th century the place was a vacant lot called "la rambla". Nobody had any special interests, it was an inhospitable area outside the ramparts. But shortly before 1863, we find this place called 'bastion of the bourgeois'. It had become a pretty popular walk among Peruvians.
In 1863 the place as we know it was created, but it was not dedicated to anyone except the court of justice built just recently. In 1865 a project of construction of a fountain was canceled, it was to be named "Monument for the fountain of the place of the courthouse". It was not until 1876 that the place took the name François Arago. Three years later his statue was deposited there. The statue itself is a work of Antonin Mercier and the base is Paul Pujol, architect. "
