There were only two legions formed by the Union during the Civil War. Purnell Legion was in the fall of 1861 from Baltimore and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The Tenth Legion was formed in October 1861 from Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties in New York.
A monument honoring the Tenth Legion is located in the northeast corner of Thrall Park. A 3' high rectangular granite base contains an incised shield inscribed with X. Below a bronze plaque is inscribed:

NEW YORK VETERAN VOLUNTEERS
WAR 1861-1865
COMPOSED OF THE 56TH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY,
7TH AND 8TH INDEPENDENT BATTERY
AND COMPANIES C & D OF THE
1ST REGIMENT N.Y. MOUNTED RIFLES
RECRUITED IN ORANGE, SULLIVAN
AND ULSTER COUNTIES.
