The Ypres Town Cemetery Extension is located 1 kilometer east of Ieper town center, on the Zonnebeekseweg (N332), connecting Ieper to Zonnebeke.
From October 1914 to the summer of 1918, Ypres formed the center of a salient held by Commonwealth forces (and for a time French). From April 1915, the city was bombed and destroyed more completely than any other city of its size on the Western Front.
The Extension, on the east side of the city's cemetery, was started in October 1914 and used until April 1915 and on two other occasions in 1918.
The extension was considerably increased after the armistice when 367 graves were brought from small cemeteries and isolated positions to the east and north of Ypres. There are now 604 Commonwealth victims of the First World War buried or commemorated in the extension. 141 graves are not identified and there are special memorials to 16 soldiers known or believed to be buried among them. The extension was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.
