"This church, succeeding to an old Romanesque sanctuary, was built from the fifteenth century, under the impetus of the abbesses Jeanne de Villard and Anne de Rohan, it was at the time, one of the most important projects of the region, with that of the church of Marennes.This church is one of the few examples of the flamboyant Gothic style in Saintonge.

From the outset, its dimensions impress: the church measures 41 meters in all its length, 17 meters wide, and 12 meters high under vault4. It is formed of a triple vessel lit by large windows, cut from a transept and a large gothic choir, probably unfinished. Above the nave, the attic was arranged to prevent possible disturbances and to accommodate women and children. It is accessed by a staircase, located north of the church. It is surmounted by a watchtower, dating from the fifteenth century.

The external aspect surprises a bit by the absence of bell tower: the construction of it, which should have been built on the model of that of Marennes, has indeed been interrupted by the wars of religion. A porch, which should have been its base, is located to the west. Its originality lies in the triangular shape that its builders gave it: unique in the region, it could have been inspired by the polygonal porches of some Norman churches. The church was listed as a historic monument in 1910. "

"Cette église, succédant à un ancien sanctuaire roman, est édifiée à partir du xve siècle, sous l'impulsion des abbesses Jeanne de Villard et Anne de Rohan. C'est à l'époque, l'un des plus importants chantiers de la région, avec celui de l'église de Marennes. Cette église est un des rares exemples du style gothique flamboyant en Saintonge.

D'emblée, ses dimensions impressionnent : l'église mesure 41 mètres dans toute sa longueur, 17 mètres de largeur, et 12 mètres de hauteur sous voûte4. Elle est formée d'un triple vaisseau éclairé par de larges baies, coupé d'un transept et d'un large chœur gothique, probablement inachevé. Au-dessus de la nef, les combles furent aménagés afin de prévenir d'éventuels troubles et de pouvoir y loger femmes et enfants. On y accède par un escalier, situé au nord de l'église. Celui-ci est surmonté d'une échauguette, datant du xve siècle.

L'aspect extérieur surprend un peu par l'absence de clocher : la construction de celui-ci, qui aurait dû être bâti sur le modèle de celui de Marennes, a en effet été interrompue par les guerres de religion. Un porche, qui aurait dû lui servir de base, est situé à l'ouest. Son originalité réside dans la forme triangulaire que ses bâtisseurs lui ont donné : unique dans la région, il pourrait avoir été inspiré par les porches polygonaux de certaines églises normandes. L'église a été classée monument historique en 1910."
