Die Deutsche Botschaft Athen ist die offizielle und höchste Diplomatische Vertretung Deutschlands in der Republik Griechenland.
Geschichte
Die erste Vertretung Deutschlands in Griechenland war die Preußische Gesandtschaft, welche mit Gründung des Deutschen Reiches 1871 die Deutsche Botschaft Athen wurde. 1917 wurde ein weiteres Gebäude zwecks zukünftiger Nutzung an der Akademias Nr. 19 gebaut und vermietet (nach der kriegsbedingten Enteignung wurde das Gebäude 1955 zurückgegeben und an eine Bank verkauft). 1924 wurde das Botschaftsgebäude (heute Sitz der American Women´s Organization of Greece) verkauft und man zog in ein Mietshaus an repräsentativer Lage an der Leoforos Vasilissis Sofias Nr. 4. wegen Platzbedarf mussten jedoch bald weitere Stockwerke hinzugemietet werden, 1940 folgten weitere im Nachbarhaus.
Kriegsbedingt wurden 1945 die diplomatischen Beziehungen eingestellt, die britische Militäradministration in Griechenland verweigerte den Botschaftsstatus. Griechenland hatte 1950 eine Botschaft in Bonn eröffnet, die Bundesrepublik folgte 1951 mit einer Botschaft in Athen. Griechenland war somit eines von zwölf Ländern, mit denen die Bundesrepublik diplomatische Beziehungen begann. Die angemieteten Räume in der Isiodou Str. Nr. 22 wurden mehrmals erweitert, 1959 folgte der Umzug an die heutige Adresse Loukianou Nr. 3. Das Gebäude wurde 1969 gekauft und nach Erdbebenschäden und Kauf des zusätzlichen Nachbargrundstücks abgerissen und ab 1983 neu gebaut, erst 1993 jedoch wurde das Gebäude vollständig bezogen.

The first representation of Germany in Greece was the Prussian Legation, which became the German Embassy in Athens in 1871 with the founding of the German Reich. In 1917, another building was built and rented for future use at Akademias No. 19 (after the war-related expropriation, the building was returned in 1955 and sold to a bank). In 1924, the embassy building (now the seat of the American Women's Organization of Greece) was sold and moved into a tenement house in a prestigious location on the Leoforos Vasilissis Sofias No. 4 because of space requirements, however, soon additional floors had to be rented, followed in 1940 more in the neighboring house ,
Due to the war, diplomatic relations were suspended in 1945, and the British military administration in Greece refused to grant diplomatic status. Greece had opened a message in 1950 in Bonn, the Federal Republic followed in 1951 with a message in Athens. Greece was thus one of twelve countries with which the Federal Republic began diplomatic relations. The rented rooms in the Isiodou Str. No. 22 were extended several times, 1959 followed the move to the present address Loukianou No. 3. The building was purchased in 1969 and demolished after earthquake damage and purchase of additional neighboring land and rebuilt in 1983, only in 1993 however, the building was completely occupied.
