Chouteau is the second largest town in Mayes county and is part of the Cherokee Nation lands. It was first settled in 1871 when the MKT Railroad came through and many people lived in tents. It was cattle country and a fence was built around the town to keep the cattle out of the downtown area. Its population has fluctuated over the decades and is about 2100 today, and growing. Today, there is a large Amish and Mennonite population in town.
Chouteau Town Hall is located in a metal building, which has a porch roof across the front, supported by brick pillars. Town Hall houses the administrative offices, as well as the police department and utilities departments. It is also the site of Chouteau Municipal Court.
It is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 4:00. Phone 918-476-5902. The town operates with a Mayor and a 5-member Board of Trustees.
