The sand dunes here at Talacre and further west at Gronantonce formed a 4 mile ridge along the Point of Ayr to Afon Clwyd, west of Rhuddlan. The ridge was gradually worn away by visitor use and development. This stretch from Talacre to Prestatyn is all that remains.

The dunes are not only a vital natural flood defence but are also environmentally important for the rich variety of plants and animals that live there. This is recognised nationally by its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by the Countryside Council for Wales.

The site is legally protected. Activities that could damage the dunes are illegal, such as lighting fires, dropping litter or riding motorbikes.

Gronant Dunes and Talacre Warren is managed through a partnership involving land owners, lead organisations and local businesses.
