It is built on the foundations of a medieval royal castle.
The citadel is the defensive reduction of the city of Montreuil (Pas-de-Calais). It is a spur on the left bank of the Canche Valley, former border of the counties of Ponthieu and Boulonnais. The fortified site placed under its protection the port infrastructures of the city of Montreuil disappeared today.
At the end of the twelfth century, the city of Montreuil is provided with two clumps, the motte of the count and that of the king. The latter is abandoned around 1200 by Philippe Auguste in favor of the construction of a Philippine castle on the site of the current citadel. Originally, the castle is polygonal in shape, probably flanked by eight towers, without a keep. Twenty years later, he served as a model for Philippe de Hurepel, Count of Boulogne and bastard son of Philippe Auguste, for the construction of the castles of Boulogne-sur-Mer and Hardelot.
From the Philippine castle, remains the porterie flanked two massive towers equipped with archers, elements of curtain walls and two other towers.
The citadel sits on a gateway to the city of Montreuil-sur-Mer (the Queen Berthe tower) and part of the urban wall.
The tower of Queen Berthe or gate of the castle, erected in the early fourteenth century is a gate tower 15 m in diameter. It is equipped with a body of guards and an important room on the floor remodeled in the XVI or XVII century.

La citadelle est le réduit défensif de la ville de Montreuil (Pas-de-Calais). Elle est un éperon sur la rive gauche de la vallée de Canche, ancienne frontière des comtés du Ponthieu et du Boulonnais. Le site fortifié plaçait sous sa protection les infrastructures portuaires de la ville de Montreuil aujourd'hui disparues.
À la fin du XIIe siècle, la ville de Montreuil est pourvue de deux mottes, la motte du comte et celle du roi. Cette dernière est délaissée vers 1200 par Philippe Auguste au profit de la construction d'un château philippien à l'emplacement de l'actuelle citadelle. À l'origine, le château est de forme polygonale, probablement flanqué de huit tours, sans donjon. Vingt ans plus, il sert de modèle à Philippe de Hurepel,comte de Boulogne et fils bâtard de Philippe Auguste, pour la construction des châteaux de Boulogne-sur-Mer et d'Hardelot.
Du château philippien, reste la porterie flanquée deux tours massives pourvues d'archères, des éléments de courtines et deux autres tours.
La citadelle est assise sur une porte d'entrée de la ville de Montreuil-sur-Mer (la tour de la Reine Berthe) et d'une partie de l'enceinte urbaine.
La tour de la reine Berthe ou porte du château, érigée au début du XIVe siècle est une tour porte de 15 m de diamètre. Elle est munie d'un corps de gardes et d'une importante salle à l'étage remaniée au XVI ou XVIIe siècle.
