One of the coolest NGS benchmarks I've recovered - the center of the population of the state of Nevada!

I recovered this National Geodetic Survey disk from 2003 in good condition. This disk is about 8" in circumference and flush with the ground in a concrete pad and is located near Beatty High School. There is a bronze plaque monumented on a small boulder near the station that reads:

HARN Station "Beatty High School"

This survey monument is a symbolic reference to the center of
population for the state Nevada, where an imaginary, flat
weightless and rigid map of the state of Nevada would Balance
perfectly if all of it's 1,998,257 residents (based on census 2000) were
of identical weight. The station was dedicated to the public on
October 10, 2002

This survey monument was a joint project of the
Nevada Association of Land Surveyors (NALS)
Beatty Town Advisory Board
Beatty Chamber of Commerce
Beatty High School (Nye Co. School District)

For survey information,
go to the National Geodetic Survey web site at
www.ngs.noaa.gov

This disk is not listed in the Geocaching.com NGS database. The NGS posted coordinates will place you very close to this mark.

The ngs.noaa.gov website contains a webpage dedicated to each state's center of population and you can visit the page and map of the United States here.
